You know the drill. We are moving on to our sailboat July 15th, full time in the San Diego Harbor. Yes, we are keeping the Jeep and our jobs, we just want to take an adventure on trying to live smaller and more intentional.
One thing that will be small on our boat is our refrigerator. With this, we need to get creative about cooking, food choices, produce, meat, food storage, and more. At first, I was really sad that the solar power could get used up by me making my smoothies. (I have become a smoothie pro. Guess I should have known after working at Jamba Juice for 7 years!) I was stoked to find this little battery powered gem. Smoothie life can remain. If you have any better options, send them my way!
The next thing we are thinking about is the size of our refrigerator. Remember back in the dorm life days when you had the tiny fridge to hold barely anything and a little freezer shelf? Well yes, that is pretty much what we are working with. We eat about 3 dozen egg a week and go through two cartons of almond milk a week. Hummus is pretty much the only other MUST for the refrigerator, but with that list, it is pretty much full.
Here are some of our thoughts:
- Produce- Produce can mostly go out of the refrigerator. We need to plan and think of ways to store the produce to reduce the humidity spoiling it as well as keeping it from rolling around while sailing. I am looking around at brands and styles. You want to be sure to get proper ones that won’t leave lines in your fruit, assist in them molding, and are secure and safe for the boat moving. The harder part will be leftovers once the veggies are cooked
- Meat-Jeremy actually used to be a vegetarian and is really good at getting protein from pairing foods and from vegetables. We decided the easiest thing would be to become “flexitarians”. In other words, we will eat meat if we go out to someones house and that is the meal or on a pepperoni pizza, but at home, our meals will be vegetarian. This reduces refrigerator use, grocery bills, and our footprint here on Earth. We have already started this switch. Here are some of my favorite recipes so far brought to you by Tone it Up:
- Grocery Shopping- Grocery shopping may have to be twice a week and more intentional. It may be more of the local farmers markets. It may be adding in a night of fish from the fishermen that came in that night. It will be less items we can store, resulting in a fresher diet. We have a full oven and stove to work with as well. We already did not have a microwave, so that won’t be something that we are giving up. We have an instapot to use now and then also.
We picture a lot of roasted vegetables, lentils, quinoa, and of course produce and I won’t give up my smoothies!
